Each week we review the week before and add a new skill to work on. Example: Week 1 we talk story and screenplay structure using specific examples from ‘Back to the Future’. I ask people to watch before the class starts. We discuss it from a story telling perspective to get the student thinking about how to develop and structure a story.
Assignments are to write a 2-5 page screenplay (or outline), watch BTTF, and make a :30 to 1:00 film on any subject (the cat, an interesting something)
Assignments are to write a 2-5 page screenplay (or outline), watch BTTF, and make a :30 to 1:00 film on any subject (the cat, an interesting something)
Then we move into cinematography, lighting etc. and each week we review, watch the assigned project films (students do short films each week to focus on specific skills), and discuss and critique the assigned work as it relates to the topic.
We go in depth on cinematography and lighting, shot composition, coverage of action, the 180 rule, etc.
Sound recording covers principles of getting good audio that is clean and crisp.
Editing covers footage logging, organization, work flow, shot selection, looking for performance, L cuts, J cuts, transitions, working with layers, multi-cam editing, synchronizing sound, etc.
Color grading covers basics in adjusting the look of the film.
Sound design covers leveling dialogue, sound editing, foley, effects, layering audio, mastering, and re-marrying to the locked picture.
We use different softwares and there are a couple I do recommend. But I focus on principle.
I demonstrate with:
Final Cut X (Editing, multi-cam)
Premiere (Editing)
Audition (sound editing)
A little After Effects (visual effects and titles)
Logic (sound design)
